He was born on 8th February at Plymouth Dock, Devonshire and married Martha Oliver daughter of Mr E.J. Oliver of London on the 8th December 1836. I in 1843 he was in business as a bootmaker at 3, Newington Causeway, 3, Lowr.des Terrace, Knightsbridge and 102, Borough High Street, Southwark. There was a prosecution at the Old Baily of an employee for stealing


1143. THOMAS HUGHES was indicted for stealing, on the 31st of March, 1 pair of shoes, value 3s. 6d., the goods of John Christopher Woollacott, his master.


DANIEL ROBERTS I am in the employ of John Christopher Woollacott, a boot and shoemaker. The prisoner was his errand-boy, and was seat to fetch coals from the cellar in the morning—there was a pair of sheet in the cellar—I watched him—I saw him go down stairs between four and five o'olock in the afternoon, and when he came up from the cellar he went out—I followed him to the pawnbroker's, and he offered them in pledge—they were master's shoes—these are them—they are ladies' shoes—I know them to fee Mis make—they must have been concealed in the cellar, to be earned away at a convenient time—he had 3s. a week, and did not board in the house.

EDWARD M'DONNELL . I am a policeman. I took charge of the prisoner—he said he took the shoes because he was hungry.

(The prisoner pleaded poverty.) GUILTY . Aged 12.— Confined One Month.

They lived at 39 Francis Street and 4, Compton Street East, Pancras before moving to Devonport House, New Maiden, Surrey.

After his business as a boot and shoemaker he joined the staff of Cox and Company, Army Bankers in January 1838. He served them for 46 years looking site' Officers of the Royal Regiment of Artillery who, on his death subscribed to a memorial tablet which is in the New Maiden Baptist Church.. Nine of his descendants also served in the bank giving a total of 325 years service. A meeting was held in their home to discuss the possibility of forming a Local Board (later New Maiden District Council) of which he subsequently became a member. He was a member of Little Wild Street Baptist Church where he became a Senior Deacon and Secretary. He also took an interest in the Baptist Tract Society. He was anxious that children should have a good education, took an interest in their welfare and subscribed to the National Schools. When he died his estate was £749 5s 5d
